Self Luminous Exit Signs - OSHA Standards

What is OSHA?

If you have been searching for self luminous exit signs, you will invariably come across the word OSHA at least once. But what exactly does the Occupational Safety and Health Administration do? And why do they care so much about exit signs?

From the OSHA website:

"OSHA is the main federal agency charged with the enforcement of safety and health legislation."

Basically any business, organization or product is subject to OSHA's laws. So it is a good idea to familiarize yourself when it comes to OSHA's laws regarding exit fixtures.

OSHA Approved Self Luminous Exit Signs

The main document we refer to with all of our self illuminating products is the Occupational Safety and Health Standards: Means of Egress, publication 1910.37. This pub covers the 'maintenance, safeguards and operational features for exit routes.'

Some of these features described in 1910.37 include:

  • Exit routes must be kept free of explosive or flammable decor.
  • Routes must be free and unobstructed. Stairs or a ramp must be provided for exit routes that are not substantially level.
  • Egress paths should be adequately illuminated.
  • Each exit must be clearly visible, marked by a sign reading 'Exit.'
  • No decorations or other signage should obstruct visibility of the exit sign.
  • All non-exit doors that might appear as exits should be marked 'Not an Exit.'
  • 'Exit' legends must not be less than six inches high, with a 3/4" wide stroke.
  • Sign must produce at least 5 foot-candles of illumination.
  • During new construction, employees may not occupy the building until exit routes and signs are installed.

Self Powered Exit Sign Compliance

Whether you need a 10, 15 or 20 year SL exit sign, rest assured that each fixture inherently meets all theĀ  guidelines listed above. The tritium tubes which produce illumination will not begin to dim until they have reached their 10, 15 or 20 year benchmark.

Even after this benchmark is reached, tritium tubes will take about another month to decay to a point that they produce less than 5 foot-candles of light. This gives you plenty of time to call us at 800-379-1129 to arrange for sign disposal and replacement.
