The SL-MS uses no electronic circuits, bulbs or batteries and require no electrical wiring. They instead illuminate with a naturally glowing compound known as tritium. This, along with the Minnesota self luminous exit sign's durable housing, allows them to operate outdoors in the dead of winter.
